MK Crochet Megan Kreiner

MK Crochet, Megan Kreiner joined us on Yarn Thing Podcast with Marly Bird.

MKCrochetlogoMegan said she began like a lot of us when young, taught by family — her grandmother, her mother, her aunts, but didn’t feel patient enough to keep on doing scarves and things at that time, not really getting into it until she was older. She knit and crocheted from them and as a teenager she did smaller projects like baby clothes and toys.

She graduated from University of Massachusetts with BFA in computer animation & graphic design. She moved after that to Los Angeles and kept up with her skills while working as a production assistant at Sony Pictures Imagework until she could work as Layout Artist at DreamWorks and currently in Annimation.

This experience worked out really well when it came to designing and writing crochet patterns in that she creates a character with a narrative or shows it’s personality. Plus she can make suggestions so the individual creators of her designs can modify to make their own unique character. It sounds like Megan designs in both knit and crochet. She finds that some techniques work better than others for what she wants to create and she spends time admiring what others have created, imagining how they achieved their shapes.

Her book Bathtime Buddies she hope an scientist in marine biology doesn’t take offense but at same time hopes a little person can identify with their toys also, she says.  Because of her work at Dreamworks she does feel inspired to create characters, too. She has has receibed permision to do some crochet designs of Disney Characters, and has two books coming out. (This is outside of her work with Dreamworks. Her story about that clarifies a lot of things that people wonder about when creating licensed characters. So, I hope you will take time to hear what she shares…) This is all in tandem with another book coming soon of farm animals.

You’ll want to follow her so you can see these publications when they are released. There is an MK Crochet website, links to her blog. She admits she’s more active on Facebook, but you can find her designs listed in Ravelry and she has a fan group there

I listened to your podcast live while on vacation sitting and knitting by the pool eating cookies of course. Sheer bliss!

  2. Theresa says:

Enjoyed listening. Haven’t learned to crochet yet but would love to try so I can make my nephews some toys. Merry Christmas and hope you have time to make some yummy cookies.

  3. Elaine Bukowsky says:

Megan’s career is amazing and her crocheted animals are so adorable. My grandchildren will have fun picking their favs for me to make while we bake our Christmas cookies this week.

  4. Raquel C says:

Megan’s designs are so cute. It would be fun to make one of them while eating Christmas cookies. It might get a little messy, but fun nonetheless.

  5. Lorraine Sutherland says:

I have always wanted to learn to crochet toys and Megan’s toys are so adorable! I think my grandchildren would love them! That would be good project to start after we are done with baking all the Christmas cookies.

  6. Cindy says:

My grand daughter has recently learned to crochet. I love to have her visit so we can crochet and eat cookies together….a win, win.

  7. EverydayPam says:

Whenever I need inspiration I go to the craft store and peruse their selection of books. I have picked up your books dozens of times to admire it but have been too intimidated by the thought of making animals that I always put it back down. After listening to you today I know at least one of these book will be making its way into my collection. Thank you for the inspiration to both crochet and go bake more cookies!

  8. Mippy/Sabrina says:

The Bathtime Buddies book looks adoooorable. I have not knit or crocheted stuffies before so this would be a fun thing to try! Maybe I can bake up some cookies to munch on while I work as long as I don’t get crumbs everywhere!

  9. carrotmusic says:

You remind me of me – I love to bake cookies, muffins, cakes, whatever – and then I have to find someone to give it to so I won’t eat it all myself!

  10. Suzanne says:

I like to make brookies…..a cross between a brownie and a chocolate chip cookie. If we lived closer, I’d bake some and bring them right over.

  11. Shelly says:

This podcast was more enjoyable then a plate of cookies…with NO calories. I just started making stuffe animals in crochet. I really enjoy it.

  12. Jackie says:

I am now having friends who are having children and these animals sound like great shower gifts. Perhaps the next book could be centered around baking featuring a cookie platter?
