Knit and Crochet Now

KCN_Season4_PromoGraphic Today on the YarnThing Podcast with Marly Bird: the crew of the Knit and Crochet Now! TV show!  Producer, Candi Jensen; knitting expert, Kristin Nicholas; and crochet expert Ellen Gormley joined Marly to talk about the behind the scene goings on of the production of this public TV show all about knitting and crochet!

Candi Jensen is a designer in both the knit and crochet worlds who started as a content design advisor for this public television show and was thrust in the role of the producer right before production.  What began as Knit and Crochet Today is still going strong as Knit and Crochet Now! 7 years later and is still shot at the Detroit Public Television studios.  The show is now sponsored by Annie’s Crafts, where you can take classes, get supplies and check out the magazines they produce (such as Creative Knitting, one of my favorites) as well as get patterns and supplies for the projects you see on the TV show.  You can find Candi: on Ravelry, Pintrest, and all her books on Amazon.

Also with the show from the very beginning is Kristin Nicholas, the knitting expert on Knit and Crochet Now!.  Marly likes to call Kristin the Queen of Color.  Kristin is the author of eight books including: Color by Kristin, Kristin Knits, Colorful Stitchery, and more.  You can find Kristin: on her blog Getting Stitched on the Farm, her website KristinNickolas.com, and Ravelry.  She has a few new patterns that are great for Christmas: Kristin’s Colorful Christmas Stockings and the holiday card Santa Lamb, too cute!  Don’t forget to check out her other patterns and notecards while you are on her website.

Ellen Gormley joined the show in Season 3 as the crochet expert.  She started as a guest interview and came back as a permanent member of the cast soon after.  Ellen is also the new editor of Crochet! magazine (check out her first issue in Autumn 2014) and author of several books herself: Go Crochet! Afghan Design Workshop, Learn Bruges Lace, and Crocheting Clothes Kids Love.  You can find Ellen: on her blog GoCrochet, Ravelry, and her on-line classes with Annie’s Crafts (the direct links are on her blog).

We don’t have the show in the Austin, Texas area, so I don’t feel qualified to say what needs to be on the show. I just checked out the web sight, to see about the DVD’s. I’m going to put seasons 1 – 4 on my wish list. After listening to this show, I feel like I’ve missed out and want to watch. It sounds like you have so much fun and I could learn much.

  2. Patty says:

I would love to win either of the prizes. I’ve been watching Knit & Crochet Now from the beginning. The show started just when my interest in crochet began (again) and I loved seeing all the different techniques in crochet. I love the idea of a shawl a week and look forward to the Kerry Shrug. I would love to see more Amigurumi, I’m a huge fan of Stacey Trock of Freshstitches! Thanks Marly, Candi, Kristin & Ellen.

  3. Tammy Burke says:

It was so nice to hear all about the wonderfulness of the program that I ran right down to the library and asked how to request things to the library catalog. That way everyone will be able to watch it ~ just have to wait till I’m done!

  4. Sue Fisher says:

Since I haven’t seen the show, I am not sure what all has been covered. I would say maybe, how to pick and take care of your yarns? Best way to store them? I am a beginner so I really know nothing about yarns 🙁 We don’t get tv signals for PBS where we live so, I am going to ask the library to get the videos. Thanks for a great podcast!

  5. Margo says:

I have been a fan of the show since the beginning. Many of the questions I see in forums have to do with gauge, yarn substitution and reading patterns, maybe the show could address those issues.

  6. Mary Cast says:

I would appreciate more Tunisian, Bavarian crochet, or the crocodile stitches. I love that show and am happy to be from the area near Detroit where it was filmed. I keep hoping that I will run into them at the two story Joann store near where they film.

  7. Catherine Trouth says:

I have not seen the show since I switched from cable to satellite to now computer watching, so I am looking forward to buying the DVDs and catching back up with the show. I am looking forward to seeing your episodes, too, Marly! I would love to see projects that use the strengths of each craft (crochet and knit) together in one project–also yarn substitution, as someone else also suggested. I am also always interested in getting better and better at my finishing techniques. Finally, I am trying to learn more cast-off and cast-ons and what kind of projects they are good for.

  8. Dominik says:

Unfortunately the show doesn’t air in India, so I don’t get to watch it – I would love to, though, as I find watching knitting and crochet videos, shows, etc. to be very inspiring! There is so much to learn out there!

  9. Amberly says:

I have never seen the show (it doesn’t air on any of the channels I get), but it sounds wonderful. I would like to learn some new knitting bind offs, I only know the basic one, so the show could include that.

  10. VickyC says:

I’ve seen a few of the programs but it hasn’t been on my PBS Station lately. I would like to see steeking if they haven’t already done an episode on it.

  11. Cheryl clemons says:

I love the show. i watch it every chance i get. I would love to see the crocodile stitch. Looking forward to the new season coming up.

  12. Sally Hendricks-Bauer says:

I don’t get the show on my local station so I will make sure I call them. I just love to find out new techniques so that would be my suggestion.

  13. Miranda Gaines says:

I haven’t had the pleasure to see the show, but would love to. I don’t know what they have already covered, but for crochet I would say Tunisian and for knitting I would say more on entrelac and other special techniques.

  14. Angie says:

I’m not sure if we get the show but I will definitely be looking for it now! I would love to watch the back episodes and think that showing projects geared toward handspun would be awesome 🙂 crouchingcheese on ravelry.

  15. Liz Fox says:

I am telling everyone to call their local PBS station!! I love seeing ANYTHING! But I am particularly interested in making knitted jewelry.

  16. Leah Session-Aikens says:

I would like see machine knitting on the show. I am a big fan, but it is not broadcast in the Philadelphia, South Jersey or Allentown, PA markets so I purchase the DVDs.

  17. hotknitter says:

I don’t know if this has been covered in the past, but a how-to for converting pullovers to cardigans would be helpful.

  18. Amy says:

I love Knit and Crochet Now especially because it gives equal time to both crafts. First, I’d definitely like to see more Marly Bird not only for your stitching talents, Marly, but because I can’t get enough of your laugh. I’d also like more sweaters and shawls and some of the specialized crochet techniques like overlay crochet, double ended Tunisian, and Bruges lace. The lovely and talented Ellen Gormley is the perfect person for a Bruges lace episode. I’m so excited she’s the new editor of Crochet! Magazine.

  19. Charles Parker says:

I’m not sure we have it here in Las Vegas. I’d like to see a show on Double Knitting, or Extreme Double Knitting. I think it would a
So be fun to see hand spinning. Being a spinning, I would love to encourage others.

  20. kim dawson says:

I have been trying to get the create channel since this ep aired. I called my local network which told me I needed to call DIRECTV which were no help what so ever and after posting all over facebook I learned that the only way I might get it was by buying a over the air box that hooks up to my DIRECTV box… but because of how far I live it will probably not work.. so needless to say I am bummed 🙁 I do watch online though so its not to bad. I agree with the previous post about seeing how to store yarns and maybe even how to tell a good yarn from a cheaper one. I know there are prices that range from here and there but what makes a good yarn and how to choose one that will last. I also would love to see what yarns (content) are best for what type of projects..

  21. Pam says:

Love this show on PBS it gives new knitters/crocheters some inspiration to try new things
