Alaska Inside Passage Knitting Cruise

Hi Everyone!!

Did you miss Marly over the last two weeks?  I know she missed you guys!!  Her time with Crafty Cruises in Alaska was absolutely the best!

The last two weeks have been an amazing whirlwind of fun for John (Marly’s hubby) and Marly!  This was the first time that the Love Birds (see what I did there?) were able to take a grownup vacation and leave the little Birds at home.

Today Marly was full of stories of their trip, ranging from the cruise details, to the fun excursions, to hers and John’s time in Seattle.

As you may know Marly is a huge fan of the Twilight series, and she talked John into going to Forks for the day, where she completely geeked out on all the Twilight things in town.  They also went and saw the coast line, and put her feet in the water (which for Marly is a big deal)!

The group of knitters on the cruise numbered about 35 people, (there were a LOT more folks on the ship, there were just 35 on the cruise to be crafty!) and there were folks from all over!  She was so excited to meet them all once everyone had gotten settled on the ship, and then get to know these folks over the course of the cruise!

Marly and John did do a whale watching excursion and had a fabulous time, and she got some amazing pictures (be sure the check them out in this post)!  She has given some pictures from all different parts of the trip for this post, so make sure you scroll through all of them here.

One of the other things that Marly was so excited to do, was yarn shop hopping!  She visited one in Seattle, and a couple in Juneau, Alaska.  What fiber enthusiast DOESN’T love a local something fun when you go on a vacation and hit up a local yarn store?  Lesson learned…make sure John is either outside the store when she completes her purchase, or at least distract him when the total comes up on the register!  (Make sure you indulge yourself in some Quivut!)

Some things Marly learned about/while cruising:

  • How to pack (minimal shoes, they take up too much room)
  • How to Muster (life jacket, CHECK!)
  • How to Tender (sit down, don’t rock the boat)
  • The cost of your cruise is not necessarily your grand total!
  • Humpback whales are solitary creatures
  • Orcas travel in pods
  • Whales’ tail fins, are much like a fingerprint!

(Sidenote from Jolene: As I’m listening I’m giggling y’all…I’m waving back to all of you as well!! – J)

Next week’s show has a super fun gifts and of course, more prizes!!

We travel pretty extensively since our kids are all over the place! But the best vacation, BY FAR, is our current stay-cation. All of our kids & grand babies are with us, at home, in NH.

Hi Marly, I enjoyed hearing about your Alaska cruise. I’m live on the west side of Puget Sound – so you were practically in my neighborhood when you got off the ferry on the way to Forks. My hubby and I did an Alaska cruise a couple of years ago (no knitting group on our cruise though – darn it) and I hope to get back there again. I keep looking at the knitting cruises and would love to take one of those some time. Loved the pics you posted – tell your hubby those were some cool looking shades he was wearing.

  3. Debbie from Australia says:

    Hi Marly,
It was great hearing about your holiday and I would love to be able to do a cruise but unfortunately due to health reasons that’s not possible now. The best holiday I had was a working one as a nanny traveling through the Northern Territory and going to visit my dad over the other side of the peninsula.
Love the pics you posted, thank you.

When I graduated from high school I went on a trip from Texas to Illinois to see a former camp counselor take her final vows as a nun. I went with a priest, two counselors, two nuns, and four HS graduates. We went up the Arch, slept in retirement homes for priests, and saw Lincoln’s law office. Boy, you sure couldn’t do that now! But I had sonics fun and saw so many sights!

Five years ago I went to Italy with my two sons that were 18 and 20 at the time. We packed a tent, several changes of clothes in backpacks and hit the road. We traveled by train and camped since it was a tight budget. We went to Rome, Capri, Sorrento, And San Gigliamano. A wonderful time with my boys. My husband has been to Europe many times for work, and really isn’t a camping fan so he skipped it. I didn’t knit then. Just think of all the yarn stores I missed.

One of my favorite vacations was taking my kids for the first time to Disneyland. I love that time when they still believe in the magic. So cool! Love all your vacation pictures. Looks like you had such a fun time! 🙂

I have two vacations in my lifetime that are my favorite, both camping. One was on the Washington coast, near Westport. The campground was half forest, half beach and we came home with about 30 whole, unchipped, absolutely perfect sand dollars that we’d collected when we weren’t flying kites or blowing bubbles. The other was in Wyoming, south of Jackson Hole, beautiful area, where we had deer visit every day and a loud creek that wound around our camp. A friend had brought a tipi and we sat in it at night, I knit there by firelight, and showed my granddaughter how knitting works. I’m so glad you enjoyed your cruise, and prouder still of your husband’s patience on the whole adventure.

My favorite vacations are camping, usually at the beach or up in the mountains. I’m proud of your husband for his patience on your adventure, I am glad you enjoyed it! Hope to hear more of you doing this in the future.

  9. Liz Fox says:

So glad you’re back! My favorite trip was to London. I saw 5 shows in the west end in 3 days! London is awesome and i can wait to go back.

    Hi Marly,

What a fun time I had listening about your trip. We took a great trip from our home to New Orleans last fall on Amtrak. It was amazing to ride in a sleeper car, to see the US from the train and to dine in the dining car. My kids loved it! I highly recommend Amtrak for family travel.

  11. Mary Kay Smith says:

My favorite vacation is our most recent one, also a cruise to Alaska! My husband and I had been on one 18 years ago, and this time we took our 2 daughters, ages 16 and 9, along. It was a Disney cruise, they were the perfect age, and we all had a great time! I too went to the same yarn shops you did, particularly loved the one in Juneau. I did make it to the one in Ketchikan, at The Point. We had to take their little shuttle because it is about a mile north of the downtown area, but totally worth it! They had the best red velvet cupcakes ever!

The best vacation I ever had was when I was in High School. Me and 6 other girls went to France our senior year. We were there for about 2 weeks and traveled from Paris to St Michelle to Normandy. I Loved Normandy Beach it was breath taking being there with all those graves… you could almost feel their spirits there with you. I have a beautiful cross necklace I bought in a shop in St. Michelle that I Love dearly and wear all the time… and I found a silver ring on the streets of Paris… which I call my lucky ring..

  13. Christine Vawter says:

My favorite trip happened to be a cruise. I went to Mexico and I felt like Annie in Daddy Warbuck’s mansion. It was amazing and all I had to pay for was tips and fun money. It did make me realize how blessed I am, and really made me want to go on a mission trip someday. I was soooo spoiled on that trip and yet so many people have to walk barefoot for miles just for water:(

  14. Jennifer says:

I am glad you had a wonderful time on your trip to WA and on your cruise. It brought tears to my eyes as I grew up in Wa and miss it so much. My hubby is in military but I go home once sometimes twice a year. The beauty is awesome and the crisp air is something that has to be experienced. The story behind Lorna Laces would be very interesting.
